Choosing a rewarding career in healthcare

Written by: Mavic
Caring for me mirrors a kind of vocation where one is called to it rather than selecting to do it out of many options. It is a special kind of work which involves the ability to empathise and give compassion. Out of all the professions in the world, a caring profession simply cannot be replaced by technology. No amount of technology can manufacture a warm touch, a gentle pat on the shoulder to reassure a fearful patient and a bright smile helping patients to hold on and fight to get well even when chances of recovery is very slim.
I have been a nurse for more than 20 years and in all those years of caring and providing help to patients and their relatives, I always look back with joy and delight knowing that I have made a small difference in the lives of many. A caring job is the best job in the world!
I choose a caring job because I love to make other people feel better. I take pleasure in helping others and making them smile, making a difference in their situation. As a nurse or care assistant, we have a unique opportunity to be there when a person is at their most vulnerable. The chance to be able to alleviate a patient's pain and suffering is simply wonderful.
I choose a caring job because I want to go home at the end of each day with a smile on my face because I have made a difference. I choose to care and to give love and understanding. To lend a hand, a listening ear and give a nod and a smile is most rewarding when you see someone who needed it the most: the patients.
A caring job is not without its hardships and challenges. Its not glamorous and can be taxing and trying sometimes... but you always find joy in doing it in spite of all the difficulties. If I would be given another chance to choose what I would do in my life as a profession for the second time, I would choose a caring job over and over again!
